Two garments labelled with the same size can have different fits. To make the choice easier, compare actual measurements and care requirements instead of relying only on your usual size. Have a garment that fits you well, a flexible measuring tape and a few notes ready before opening several product listings.
Distinguish between body and garment measurements
The seller’s chart may describe the body the garment is intended to fit or the dimensions of the garment laid flat. These are different measurements. Read the method provided and measure in the same places. Do not double a width or add extra room at random. If the listing does not explain what is being measured, look for the manufacturer’s documentation or ask the seller to clarify before you decide. Identify the units used in each listing and compare using the same unit. Do not infer clothing or shoe sizes from the store’s country alone. The Canadian care-symbol reference below covers the symbols it presents.
Compare with real use in mind
Think about what you will wear underneath, the movements you will make and the length you want. Choosing a jacket for walks over a thick sweater is not quite the same as choosing one to wear indoors. Lay your reference garment flat without stretching it and note the relevant measurements. For shoes, follow the manufacturer’s own method and check the width; length alone does not describe the full shape of a foot.
Read the fabric content and care instructions together
Fabric content helps you understand what you are buying, but on its own it cannot tell you how comfortable or thick an item will be, or how it will behave in the wash. Also check the care instructions and any available construction details. An item that requires care you do not want to carry out may get little use. The label on the product you receive is still the reference to read before cleaning it for the first time. The Canadian guide to care symbols can help you interpret it.
Check the terms for your chosen option
Size, colour, seller and return terms can vary from one offer to another. Check the selected option when ordering on Amazon and keep the relevant information. When the item arrives, inspect it and try it on in accordance with the applicable return terms before removing the tags or washing it. This site does not display prices or guarantee returns; check those details with the retailer.
Compare like-for-like measurements
A useful note includes the measurement, unit and method. Saving the chosen option’s size chart can also prevent confusion between models.
| The listing gives… | Your comparison point |
|---|---|
| Body chest circumference | Body measurement taken using the manufacturer’s method. |
| Garment width laid flat | A reference garment laid flat, measured at the same points without stretching. |
| Garment length | The same starting point and measuring path shown in the diagram. |
If the measuring method is missing, do not calculate a match at random. Clarify it, then compare the desired cut and ease separately from the size on the label.
